Short Biography – Astrid Haas

Here’s my academic short biography: I am a researcher and educator in North American Studies at Bielefeld University and a member of the university’s Center for InterAmerican Studies. (See: and Also check out my CV:

After receiving a doctorate in English from the University of Münster, I have been teaching British, North American, and Inter-American Studies at the universities of Münster, Bielefeld, and Wuppertal. (See also: From 2007-2010 I also co-coordinated the Research Group „E Pluribus Unum“ in Bielefeld.

My research and teaching interests include the literary genres of autobiography, travel writing, and drama. I further work in Ethnic, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Science Studies, as well as popular culture. I have published the monograph Stages of Agency: The Contributions of American Drama to the AIDS Discourse (2011). My most recent edited journal issue is entitled The Harlem Renaissance from an Inter-American Perspective (2014). I am now preparing my new book for publiation and am excited to see it in print next year: Lone Star Vistas: Constructions of Texas in US American, Mexican, and German Travel Narratives, 1821-1861.
